Description of key information

The octanol-water partition coefficients (Pow) for components of DOWFAX™ 8390 solution surfactant were estimated according to OECD Guideline 117: HPLC Method. The estimated log Pow values range from less than 1.00 to 1.82.

Additional information

The octanol-water partition coefficients (Pow) for components of DOWFAX™ 8390 solution surfactant were estimated according to OECD Guideline 117: HPLC Method. The estimated log Pow values range from less than 1.00 to 1.82. In the defined HPLC assay, three chromatographic peaks were observed which accounted for approximately 100 % of the test material composition. The HPLC retention times for these components correlated to estimated log Pow values ranging from less than 1.00 to 1.82. It should be noted that the components of this substances possess ionizable functional groups (i.e., aromatic sulfonates) which cannot occur in a fully non-ionized (protonated) state within the pH range of 0 – 14. By definition, the octanol/water partition coefficient (log Pow) describes partitioning of non-ionized species between mutually-saturated water and octanol solvent phases. By this definition, log Pow values cannot be determined experimentally for components of the DOWFAX 8390 solution surfactant. However, the estimated log Pow values reported here may provide a reasonable representation of expected partitioning behavior among aqueous and hydrophobic (organic matter) phases in the environment. The components of DOWFAX 8390 solution surfactant are, therefore, expected to have low potential for bioaccumulation in the aquatic environment.
