Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Description of key information

The toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria was investigated using different freshwater and marine water algae species.

The most sensitive freshwater algae species was Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata with an EC50 of 6.4 mg/L and the marine water algae Microcystis aeruginosa with an EC50 greater than 117 mg/L. The algae proved to be the most sensitive species with regard to aquatic toxicity.

As a result the substance is considered to be classified as R52 -53 (Harmful to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment) under Directive 67/548/EEC, as amended for the 31st time in Directive 2009/2/EG.

The available experimental test data are reliable and suitable for classification purposes under Regulation 1272/2008. As a result the substance is considered to be classified as aquatic chronic 3 (H412: Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects) under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, as amended for the tenth time in Directive EC 2017/776.
