- Executive summary:
The test is conducted to determine the temperature or temperature range of the phase transition from a solid to a liquid.
The dry substance is finely pulverised in a mortar and is put into a capillary tube, fused at one end, so that the filling level is approximately 3 mm after being tightly packed. The temperature of the apparatus is heated to about 15°C below the expected melting temperature, then the filled capillary tubes are inserted and testing is started, generally at a maximum rate of 1°C/min.
This method has an estimated accuracy of ± 0.5°C. The test is conducted in accordance with the procedure described in EU Regulation (EC) 440/2008, Annex Part A test A1.
Interpretation of results:
The mean of at least three measurements, which are in the range of the estimated accuracy, is reported as the melting temperature.
If the difference between the temperature at the beginning and at the final stage of melting is within the limits of the accuracy of the method, the temperature at the final stage of melting is taken as the melting temperature; otherwise the two temperatures are reported.
If the substance decomposes or sublimes before the melting temperature is reached, the temperature at which the effect is observed shall be reported.
