Additional information
Two studies, investigating the toxicity to freshwater algae of fatty acids, C16-18 even numbered and C18-unsatd. triesters with propylidynetrimethanol (CAS 57675-44-2) are available. During both static Algal Growth Inhibition tests low inhibiting effects on growth rate and biomass were observed within 72 hour test period at the tested concentrations. The key study (Häner, 2006) according to OECD 201 with Desmodesmus subspicatus determined an ErL0 (72 h) > 100 mg/L (WAF loading rate) based on growth rate. In the supporting study (Craig, 2005) similar to OECD 201 with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata a low inhibition of growth was observed (11%) at the WAF loading rate of 1000 mg/L after 72 h (ErL20 (72 h) > 1000 mg/L). In addition, another algae toxicity test (Kuttler, 1997) with Desmodesmus subspicatus showed low toxicity of the test substance (4.2% inhibition of growth rate) after 72 h at a WAF loading rate of 10000 mg/L (EL10 > 10000 mg/L). All results show low toxicities of fatty acids, C16-18 even numbered and C18-unsatd. triesters with propylidynetrimethanol (CAS 57675-44-2) far in excess of natural occurring concentrations (water solubility < 0.05 mg/L).Therefore, the test substance is not harmful to algae.
This is supported by several structurally similar category members, but in particular with the available data on the acute toxicity of Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS 68002-78-8) to aquatic algae, which was conducted according to OECD guideline 201 (Bouillon, 2012). Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata were used as test organisms. The test solutions were prepared by using the water accommodated fraction (WAF) of the test substance. The algae were exposed to the test substance for 72 hours. Based on the growth rate of algae an EL50 > 110 mg/L (nominal) was determined.. Therefore acute toxic effects on aquatic algae are not expected within the range of the water solubility of the substance (<0.05 mg/L; Frischmann, 2012).
Based on these results both from fatty acids, C16-18 even numbered and C18-unsatd. triesters with propylidynetrimethanol (CAS 57675-44-2) and from structurally related read-across substances (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which are characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile, it can be concluded that fatty acids, C16-18 even numbered and C18-unsatd. triesters with propylidynetrimethanol will not exhibit effects to aquatic algae up to the limit of water solubility. As it can be seen in the data matrix of the category justification in section 13 and the overall summary, all reliable data in the category support the hazard assessment of each category member by showing a consistent pattern of results; no toxicological effects up to the limit of water solubility.
