Additional information

The upper flammability limit in air of trimethylsilane was determined using a 1 litre stainless steel chamber according to ASTM E918-83; the lower flammability limit in air was determined using a 5 litre glass flask according to ASTM E681-94. The test vessels were electrically heated at a test temperature of 25°C and standard atmospheric pressure (1013 hPa). Under the conditions of the study, the Lower Flammability Limit (LFL) and Upper Flammability Limit (UFL) of trimethylsilane were determined to be 1.38 (vol%) and 51.3 (vol%) respectively.

In contact with water, trimethylsilane is expected to react slowly to form hydrogen as a second product of this reaction. The rate at which hydrogen is formed is not expected to be significant with respect to the classification criteria set out in Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 and as such trimethylsilane is not classified as a substance which in contact with water emits flammable gas. In addition, due to the submission substance being classified as an extremely flammable gas, suitable precautions are already required for the safe handling of the substance.
