Additional information

As toxicity studies for terrestrial organisms with L-methionine were not available, studies performed with D,L-methionine were used for estimation of the toxicity of L-methionine.

The provided data show that D,L-methionine is relatively non-toxic to earthworm, as the LC50 is >1000 µg/cm2.

D,L-Methionine has no effect on germination of barley. The extension of roots is effected by D,L-methionine at an pH of 6.5 (62% root extension), but at an pH of 5.5 the root extension was not inhibited (90% root extension).

Significant toxicity to terrestrial organisms is not expected, as L-methionine is a naturally occurring amino acid functioning as basic metabolite and building block for all organisms. Due to its omnipresence and the presented data significant toxic effects to terrestrial organisms can be excluded. Further, D,L-methionine was shown to be readily biodegradable.
