Test material

Constituent 1
Chemical structure
Reference substance name:
Cerium
EC Number:
231-154-9
EC Name:
Cerium
Cas Number:
7440-45-1
Molecular formula:
Ce
IUPAC Name:
cerium(3+)
Details on test material:
Sample in massive form, partially covered by a layer of oxidised material.

Results and discussion

Results:
Two samples of 22.2 g were cut off from the massive cerium probe and were brought into de-ionised water at room temperature. The emited gases were measured using an appropriate gas burette. The gas emission was controlled every hour for 24 hours, after which the gas emission stopped.
The overall gas amount collected was 6,9 ml (measured under standard conditions, p = 1013,3 hPa and T=273 K), i.e. a gas development rate of 12,45 ml /Kg sample x hour.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The low gas development rate of 12,45 ml /Kg Ce x hour does not suffice to fulfill any of the classification requirements of the division 4.3, ie. packing groups I, II and III. Therefore, cerium metal shall not be considered to emit flammable gases when in contact with water.
