Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
accepted calculation method
Guideline:
other: REACH guidance on QSAR R.6, May 2008
Principles of method if other than guideline:
BIOWIN program v4.10: scientifically accepted calculation method for organic chemicals
GLP compliance:
no
Remarks:

Inoculum or test system:
other: not applicable
Remarks on result:
other: estimated by BIOWIN v4.1 (US EPA): the fields "%Degr.", "St. dev.", "Parameter" and "Sampling time" cannot be filled in
Validity criteria fulfilled:
not applicable
Interpretation of results:
readily biodegradable
Conclusions:
Result of estimation software BIOWIN v4.10 [by US-EPA (EPI Suite v4.1)]: According to the Linear Model, as well as to the Non-linear Model, allyl alcohol is biodegrading fast. The Ultimate Biodegradation Timeframe is given in weeks, whereas the Primary Biodegradation Timeframe shows days for the substance. MITI Linear Model, as well as the Non-linear Model, states that allyl alcohol is readily biodegradable. Under anaerobic conditions allyl alcohol is suspected to be biodegraded fast. The overall ready biodegradability prediction for the substance allyl alcohol is YES.
Endpoint:
biodegradation in water: ready biodegradability
Type of information:

Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: peer-reviewed handbook
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:

Oxygen conditions:
aerobic
Inoculum or test system:
activated sludge (adaptation not specified)
Duration of test (contact time):
28 d
Value:
82 - 86
Remarks on result:
other: aerobic removal exceeds 82-86% of theoretical BOD after 2-3 weeks
Validity criteria fulfilled:
not specified
Interpretation of results:
readily biodegradable
Conclusions:
In an aerobic biodegradation study using activated sludge, allyl alcohol degraded 82-86% after 2-3 weeks; moreover, a BOD of 1.6 to 1.8 g/g [Heukelekian and Rand (1955); Bridie et al. (1979)] and a ThOD of 2.21 g/g [Bridie et al. (1979)] indicate that the experimental result seems to be correct: allyl alcohol is readily biodegradable.

Description of key information

1) aerobic removal exceeds 82-86% of theoretical BOD after 2-3 weeks (Handbook of Environmental Fate and Exposure Data for Organic Chemicals, 1989)
2) 86% degradation after 2 weeks (MITI, 1976)
3) readily biodegradable (BIOWIN v4.1, 2010)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable
