Imidazole is readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

To determine the biodegradability of Imidazole, a GLP study following the method laid down in OECD Guideline 301A using domestic activated sludge as inoculum was performed. After 18 days a DOC removal of 90 -100% was measured. This result is supported by a study according to OECD guideline 301C published by the Japanese National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (2003) which resulted in a BOD/ThOD of 90% after 4 weeks.
