Description of key information

Isobutyl vinyl ether is readily biodegradable; therefore, abiotic hydrolysis is not relevant.


However, the substance hydrolyses rapidly under acidic conditions. Under neutral conditions, it slowly hydrolyses. Under alkaline conditions, it it hydrolytically stable.

According to Regulation (EC) 1907/2006, Annex VIII, Section 9.2.2.1, Column 2, the study does not need to be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable. The substance is readily biodegradable (72% after 28 d, OECD 310; BASF SE, 2020, report no. 27G0186/03G017; see IUCLID Ch. 5.2.1).


Nevertheless, the hydrolytic stability of isobutyl vinyl ether was investigated according to OECD 111 and under GLP. The study was performed at pH 4, 7, and 9 with temperatures of 20, 30, and 50 °C.


The substance hydrolyses rapidly under acidic conditions. At pH 4 and 20 °C, a half-life of less than 2 h was determined. At pH 7 and 20 °C, the half-life was measured to be between 50.8 and 52.6 h. Under alkaline conditions (pH 9), the substance is hydrolytically stable (DT50 > 192 h (> 8 d) at 50 °C; BASF SE, 2010; report no. 10L00007).


Based on the measured data, the following half-lives were calculated for pH 7:


- at 20 °C: 48.0 h


- at 25 °C: 34.8 h


Only the formation of some traces of isobutanol as a significant reaction product was observed. Polyisobutylvinylether could not be identified.
