Description of key information

Biodegradation in water

Biodegradability of Potassium dodecyl sulfate (CAS no. 4706 -78 -9) is predicted using OECD QSAR toolbox version 3.3 (2017) with logKow as the primary descriptor. Test substance undergoes 73.81% degradation by BOD in 28 days. Thus, based on percentage degradation, the test chemical Potassium dodecyl sulfate was estimated to be readily biodegradable in water.

Biodegradation in water and sediment

Estimation Programs Interface (EPI Suite, 2017) prediction model was run to predict the half-life in water and sediment for the test compound Potassium dodecyl sulfate (CAS No. 4706 -78 -9). If released in to the environment, 15.8% of the chemical will partition into water according to the Mackay fugacity model level III and the half-life period of Potassium dodecyl sulfate in water is estimated to be 15 days (360 hrs). The half-life (15 days estimated by EPI suite) indicates that the chemical is not persistent in water and the exposure risk to aquatic animals is moderate to low whereas the half-life period of Potassium dodecyl sulfate in sediment is estimated to be 135 days (3240 hrs). However, as the percentage release of test chemical into the sediment is less than 2% (i.e, reported as 1.59%), indicates that Potassium dodecyl sulfate is not persistent in sediment.

Biodegradation in soil

The half-life period of Potassium dodecyl sulfate (CAS No. 4706 -78 -9) in soil was estimated using Level III Fugacity Model by EPI Suite version 4.1 estimation database (EPI suite, 2017). If released into the environment, 82.6% of the chemical will partition into soil according to the Mackay fugacity model level III. The half-life period of Potassium dodecyl sulfate in soil is estimated to be 30 days (720 hrs). Based on this half-life value of Potassium dodecyl sulfate, it is concluded that the chemical is not persistent in the soil environment and the exposure risk to soil dwelling animals is moderate to low.

Additional information

Biodegradation in water

Predicted data for the target compound Potassium dodecyl sulfate(CAS No. 4706-78-9) and various supporting weight of evidence studies for its read across substance were reviewed for the biodegradation end point which are summarized as below:

In a prediction done by SSS (2017) using OECD QSAR toolbox version 3.3 with logKow as the primary descriptor, percentage biodegradability of test chemicalPotassium dodecyl sulfate(CAS No. 4706-78-9) was estimated.Test substance undergoes 73.81% degradation by BOD in 28 days. Thus, based on percentage degradation, the test chemical Potassium dodecyl sulfate was estimated to be readily biodegradable in water.

In a supporting weight of evidence study from authoritative database (J-CHECK, HSDB, 2017 and Envichem, 2014) for the read across chemical Sodium dodecyl sulfate (CAS no. 151-21-3),biodegradation experiment was conducted for 14 days for evaluating the percentage biodegradability of read across substance Sodium dodecyl sulfate under aerobic conditions. The study was performed according to OECD Guideline 301 C (Ready Biodegradability: Modified MITI Test (I)). Concentration of inoculum i.e, sludge used was 30 mg/l and initial test substance conc. used in the study was 100 mg/l, respectively. The percentage degradation of substance Sodium dodecyl sulfate was determined to be 85 and 99.3% by BOD, O2 consumption, TOC removal, Test mat. analysis and UV-VIs parameter in 14 days. Thus, based on percentage degradation, Sodium dodecyl sulfate is considered to be readily biodegradable in nature.

For the same read across chemical Sodium dodecyl sulfate (CAS no. 151-21-3),biodegradation experiment was conducted for 28 days for evaluating the percentage biodegradability of read across substance Sodium dodecyl sulfate (GSBL database, 2017). The study was performed according to OECD Guideline 301 A (Ready Biodegradability: DOC Die Away Test). Mixed culture was used as a test inoculum obtained from sewage treatment plant, drain. Initial test substance conc. used in the study was 40 mg DOC/l. The percentage degradation of substance Sodium dodecyl sulfate was determined to be >90% by DOC removal parameter in 28 days. Thus, based on percentage degradation, Sodium dodecyl sulfate is considered to be readily biodegradable in nature.

Another biodegradation study from authoritative database (HSDB, 2017) was conducted for 14 days for evaluating the percentage biodegradability of read across substance (dodecyloxy)sulfonic acid (CAS no. 151 -41 -7). The study was performed according to OECD Guideline 301 C (Ready Biodegradability: Modified MITI Test (I)) under aerobic conditions. Concentration of inoculum i.e, sludge used was 30 mg/l and initial test substance conc. used in the study was 50 mg/l, respectively. The percentage degradation of substance (dodecyloxy)sulfonic acid was determined to be 70 and 93% by BOD and DOC removal parameter in 14 days. Thus, based on percentage degradation, (dodecyloxy)sulfonic acid is considered to be readily biodegradable in nature.

In a supporting weight of evidence study from secondary source (OECD SIDS, 2007) for the read across chemical Sodium decyl sulfate (CAS no. 142-87-0), biodegradation experiment was conducted for 30 days for evaluating the percentage biodegradability of read across substance Sodium decyl sulfate (CAS no. 142-87-0). The study was performed according to OECD Guideline 301 D (Ready Biodegradability: Closed Bottle Test). Test substance undergoes 98% degradation by O2 consumption parameter in 30 days. The pass level for ready biodegradability was reached within 14 days. Thus, based on percentage degradation, Sodium decyl sulfate is considered to be readily biodegradable in nature.

On the basis of above results for target chemicalPotassium dodecyl sulfate(from OECD QSAR toolbox version 3.3, 2017) and for its read across substance (from authoritative database J-CHECK, HSDB, Envichem, GSBL database and secondary source), it can be concluded that the test substancePotassium dodecyl sulfatecan be expected to be readily biodegradable in nature.
