Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

As no biodegradation data are available for the substance "Reaction mass of cyclododecanol and cyclododecanone" biodegradation data derived for its constituents were used for the assessment. The biodegradation potential of cyclododecanol was tested in the "Closed Bottle Test" according to OECD TG 301 D (Hüls AG, 1994). The oxygen consumption of a mixed bacteria population from the effluent of a STP was monitored over a period of 28 days. Furthermore, cyclododecanole was tested in the "BODIS Test" (BOD of insoluable chemicals) according to the draft ISO guideline 10708 (Hüls AG, 1994). The biodegradation potential of cyclododecanone was also tested in the "BODIS Test" (BOD of insoluable chemicals) according to the draft ISO guideline 10708 (Hüls AG, 1989).

Additional information

In the three mentioned tests described above both constituents of the substance "Reaction mass of cyclododecanol and cyclododecanone" were observed to be readily biodegradable (88% to 100% degradation within 28 days). Therefore, it is strongly indicated that the substance "Reaction mass of cyclododecanol and cyclododecanone" is readily biodegradable.
