The lowest temperature at which the application of the ignition source causes the vapor of the test portion to ignite and propagate over the surface of the liquid was defined as the flash point.

Since the flash point of the substance was known from literature (F.P. = 102 °C, Merck catalogue) no pretest had to be performed. The main determination consisted of 2 tests. Starting temperature was T = 80 °C, ignition trials every 1 K temperature rise were carried out.

The temperature was corrected due to atmospheric pressure.

Flash point of reference substance

In order to check the temperature measurement the flash point of a reference substance with a known value was tested.
