Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

To asses the toxicity of pentane-1,2-diol to aquatic microorganisms a guideline study with Pseudomonas putida was identified as key study [BASF 1989]. In this non-GLP study according to DIN 38412 part 8 an EC10 (17 h) of 5500 mg/L was measured. This result is supported by a non-GLP short-term respiration inhibition tests following the test procedures of ISO 8192. This test was conducted with industrial activated sludge as inoculum. After 30 min an EC20 > 1000 mg/L was determined [BASF 1986].
