IN-LIFE DATES: From: 20 February 1990 To: 23 February 1990

Test system

Vehicle:
unchanged (no vehicle)
Controls:
no
Amount / concentration applied:
0.1 mL
Duration of treatment / exposure:
Single dose
Observation period (in vivo):
72 h
Number of animals or in vitro replicates:
6
Details on study design:
The test article was placed in the right eye of each animal by gently pulling the lower lid away from the eyeball to form a cup into which the test article was dropped. The upper and lower lids were gently held together for approximately one second to prevent loss of test material.
Animal body weights were taken within 48 hours of receipt and prior to dosing. All animals were sacrificed following the 72 hour scoring period.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Interpretation of results:
other: Irritating
Remarks:
Criteria used for interpretation of results: EU
Conclusions:
E000044012 is irritating to the rabbit eye.
Executive summary:

Eye irritation potential of E000044012 (CAS 68478-10-4) was determined in a group of six albino rabbits.

There was no evidence of damage to the cornea or iris throughout the study. Conjunctival redness and chemosis was seen from 1 hour to 72 hours after application.

It can be concluded that E000044102 (CAS 68478-10-4) is not irritating to the rabbit eye. Under GHS/CLP classification, it triggers "Causes serious eye irritation" Cat 2A, H319.
