Description of key information

After 72 hours of exposure to 4-chlororesorcinol (CAS No. 95-88-5) to various nominal test concentration, EC50 was found to be at 54.606 mg/l, through equation and graphically respectively through probit analysis

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
54.606 mg/L

Additional information

The effect of test substance 4-chlororesorcinol, CAS No. 95-88-5 was studiedon the growth of fresh water green algaChlorella vulgaris. The study was conducted following OECD guideline 201- Alga growth inhibition test. The test concentration chosen for the study were 6.25mg/l, 12.5mg/l, 25mg/l, 50 mg/l, 100 mg/l and 200mg/l. The test concentrations were prepared using stock solution of the test substance using mineral media.. The green alga was exposed to the test concentration for a period of 72 hours to observe average specific growth rate and % growth inhibition under the effect of test substance. EC50 calculated graphically through probit analysis was observed to be 54.606mg/l.

Therefore the EC50 was considered to be 54.606 mg/L for 4-Chlororesorcinol and it is not readily biodegradable in nature indicating that test substance is likely to exhibit toxicity to aquatic algae in aquatic chronic 3 category as per the CLP criteria.
