The PBT Assessment for OPP is based on the criteria set out in the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.11: PBT Assessment” (ECHA, 2012d).


A valid screening criterion to evaluate persistence (P) is the potential of a substance for ready biodegradability. OPP is readily biodegradable (70.8 – 75.7% biodegradation in 28 days). Therefore, it is not expected to be persistent in the environment and it does not meet the Persistent (P) or very Persistent (vP) criteria.


OPP is considered to be not bioaccumulative based on the results of a bioaccumulation study (BCF = 21.7). The test substance does not meet the Bioaccumulative (B) or very Bioaccumulative (vB) criteria.


Long-term toxicity testing with Daphnia magna resulted in a NOEC of 0.009 mg a.i./L (OECD 211; measured). Therefore the substance has to be classified as aquatic chronic 1 according to the 2nd ATP of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP). Therefore, the test substance does meet the T criterion according to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XIII.


In conclusion, OPP is considered not to be PBT or vPvB.
