Description of key information

Removal of N,N-bis(carboxylatomethyl)-L-glutamic acid in biological treatment plants: >95% after 14 days (OECD TG 303A).

Based on the CBT with seawater, this substance should be classified as inherently and ultimately biodegradable in seawater.

A simulation test on the biodegradation of the test substance in an activated sludge plant treating domestic waste water (CAS test) with reliability 2 is available for N,N-bis(carboxylatomethyl)-L-glutamic acid. This test showed a removal percentage of >95 from day 14 until the end of the test (day 29).

In order to assess the biotic degradation of L-Glutamic acid diacetic acid tetra sodium salt in seawater, a biodegradability test (OECD 306) was performed. L-Glutamic acid diacetic acid tetra sodium salt was biodegraded 26% in the Closed bottle test at day 28. In the prolonged Closed Bottle test this substance was biodegraded 83% at day 60. The biodegradation reached at day 60 of the test demonstrates that this test substance should be classified as inherently and ultimately biodegradable in seawater. These biodegradation percentages were calculated on the assumption that the test substance was converted to water, carbon dioxide and nitrate.
