Description of key information

Tungsten hexachloride is a non-combustible and non-oxidizing solid inorganic substance that forms purple hexagonal crystals. The substance has a melting point of 282 °C, a boiling point of 337 °C and its density is 3.52 g/cm³ (at room temperature). Tungsten hexachloride has a vapour pressure of 0.67 Pa at 25 °C. The substance shows very quick hydrolysis in aqueous solution with precipitation of tungsten trioxide as most likely hydrolysis product. However, the water solubility was investigated in a combined water solubility / hydrolysis study and concentrations of dissolved tungsten in sample solution from 20.0 µg/L at pH 2 -3 to 46.1 µg/L at pH 9 at 20 -25 °C were determined.
