A concern with the use of mmt as a fuel additive resides in increases in manganese concentrations in the environment. Estimations using modeling and monitoring data show that releases from exhausted gases from vehicles using fuels that incorporate mmt will not have a significant input of manganese in the environment compared to base environmental levels .

In addition, the minute estimated discharge of mmt into air and water will rapidly degrade in the presence of light as detailed in section 5.1. It is noted that mmt does not biodegrade in the different compartments or hydrolyze in the dark.

In case of soil contamination, mmt will deposiit on the soil surface.

Data on fish and aquatic plants show that mmt does not meet the criterion for a bioaccumulative substance.
