Introduction and hypothesis for the read-across
This read-across is based on the argument that target and source substances have similar physico-chemical properties due to the structural similarities in their constituents.
The target Cedarwood Texas oil, Crude (CW-TX-Crude) is a multi-constituent Unknown or Variable composition, Complex reaction products or Biological materials (UVCB) sub-category 3/Natural Complex Substance (NCS) substance (Table 1). The source Cedarwood Texas oil, Cedrol (CW-TX-Cedrol) is a distillation fraction from CW-TX-Crude and a UVCB sub-category 3/NCS. Both the target (CW-TX-Crude) and the source (CW-TX-Cedrol) have the same constituents with comparable concentrations in %w/w (Table 2). Therefore, the source and the target substances are structurally similar with common chemical functionalities (Table 1 and 2), which eventually make them to share similar physico-chemical profiles (Table 3). Moreover, both are obtained from the same biological source (wood of Juniperus mexicana (Cupressaceae)) by distillation.
An Auto-flammability test result in accordance with the EU Method A.15 (Auto-Ignition Temperature (Liquids and Gases)) and DIN 51794 (Testing of mineral oil hydrocarbons - Determination of ignition temperature) is available for the source substance. However, test result for the same physico-chemical property is missing for the target substance. The hypothesis herein is that CW-TX-Crude is expected to have the same auto-flammability profile as its analogue CW-TX-Cedrol based on the common structural and physico-chemical profiles. Consequently, a read-across from the existing physico-chemical property study on the source substance is considered as an appropriate adaptation to the standard information requirements of the REACH Regulation for the target substance, in accordance with the provisions of Annex XI, 1.5 of the REACH Regulation. - Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
