Effects on fertility

Description of key information

As lithium benzoate will readily dissociate in biological systems, assessments have been made on lithium and benzoate ions.

There is a lot of work on lithium and a key document that summarises effects of lithium on reproduction and development is published by the California EPA. This review document cites a number of primary research sources and concludes that lithium is not directly linked to fertility of developmental toxicity. Two key references have been cited in the dossier; one shows limited reduction in fertility at ca 400 mg/kg/day lithium and the second demonstrates no significant developmental toxicity at 400 mg/kg/day lithium carbonate (ca 16 mg/kg/day lithium)
