The substance is not stable in water. However, the degradation of the two main components is pH dependent.

At alkaline conditions demethylolation of hydroxymethyl groups was observed. Whereas at acid conditions depolymerisation was detected resulting in the formation of lower oligomers and monomers. At neutral pH both processes were observed in parallel. Due to the complexity and multitude of reactions a determination of a hydrolysis rate is not possible. During hydrolysis, components existing in the non-methylated product (92908 -35 -5) are produced.
