No data on the biodegradation of Acid Black 076 in water was available, therefore, a read-across approach was adopted. Specifically, available data on Similar Substance 01 and Similar Substance 02 (cobalt complexes with 2 phenyl-azo-naphtyl ligands functionalised by similar groups) were used to complete the data on this endpoint.

Regarding Similar Substance 01, biodegradablility potential was assessed in an experimental study conducted according to OECD 301B. The initial test item concentration was 20 mg/l, based on TOC. After an incubation time of 28 days, less than 10 % of the test item was degraded. Thus, the test item was considered not readily biodegradable, and regarded as poorly biodegradable.

As for Similar Substance 02, biochemical oxygen demand of a seed of microorganisms after 5 days of incubation at 20 °C (BOD5) was found to be 0 mg O2/g; chemical oxygen demand (COD), measured as the amount of oxygen needed to oxidise test substance, was found to be 493 mg O2/g. Based on these findings, a BOD5/COD equivalent to 0 was obtained. This was interpreted as a lack of rapid degradation potential. Moreover, no evidence of degradation activity was noted in a inherent biodegradability test, therefore, the test was finished after 21 days instead of 28 days. In all cases, the validity of the tests was confirmed by controls conducted with reference substances.

Further BOD5 and COD values were available for various samples with lower purities. As no details were available, key values are reported in the table below. Overall, these results confirm the lack of rapid degradation potential for the test item.
