Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Studies evaluating the short term toxicity of the read across substance bismuth hydroxide nitrate oxide (CAS 1304-85-4) to aquatic organisms are available for three trophic levels (fish, aquatic invertebrates, algae) while long term toxicity data are available only for algae. The water solubility determined for bismuth hydroxide nitrate oxide according to the OECD guidance 105 was 900.7 mg/L at 20°C and pH 3. However, all available aquatic toxicity studies reveal that solubility of the test item in the pH neutral test media was much lower, since the detectable Bi concentrations in the test solutions were mostly below the limit of detection (approx. 0.003 mg Bi/L). No toxic effects were observed up to the limit of water solubility for any of the trophic levels.

A study testing the respiration inhibition of the read across substance to activated sludge microorganisms, resulted in an EC10 (3 h) of 175.4 mg Bi/L. This concentration is considered too high for sewage treatment plants and therefore no hazard to activated sludge microorganisms is expected.
