According to Annex VII of the REACH Regulation (EC 1907/2006), a study on explosive properties does not need to be conducted if the organic substance or a homogenous mixture of organic substances contains chemical groups associated with explosive properties, but the exothermic decomposition energy is less than 500 J/g and the onset of exothermic decomposition is below 500 °C.
In a DSC assay up to 500 °C, the substance decomposed exothermically between 350 and 380 °C, with an energy release of ca. 150 J/g.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Upon a screening evalutation as described in the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), Acid Yellow 218 resulted as devoid of an explosive potential and does not require a classification according to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008).
