Conclusion on classification

Trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride is rapidly and completely hydrolysed in water to form trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. Therefore, it is scientifically relevant to use the environmental data of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (source substance) for the assessment of trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride (target substance) in a frame of a read-across approach. The entire justification of the read-across approach is available in the attached document in the ESR for endpoints on aquatic toxicity.

Short-term E/LC50 values are available for algae (growth rate 72hEC50 = 48 mg/L), daphnia (48hEC50 > 100 mg/L) and fish (96hLC50 > 100 mg/L). The lowest EC50 is obtained in the algae toxicity test showing that the substance is harmful to the aquatic organisms.

Additionaly, trifluoromethanesulfonic acid is not readily biodegradable and due to the log Kow < 4.5 there is no tendency to bioaccumulate. Chronic toxicity data are available for algae showing a 72hErC10 = 5.8 mg/L and for daphnia showing a 21dNOEC = 100 mg/L.

 

Based on analogy with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride is not classified as hazardous to the aquatic environment according to the CLP criteria, and is classified in acute cat.3 according to the criteria of the UN GHS.
