Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
October 11, 2017 (Study initiation) - November 17, 2017 (Study termination)
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
Version / remarks:
rev. 6
Deviations:
no
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The test item is loosely filled into a mould. The mould is made of metal, has a length of 250 mm and a triangular cross section with an inner height of 10 mm and an inner width of 20 mm. On both sides of the mould in a longitudinal direction two metal sheets are mounted as lateral limitations which project 2 mm beyond the upper edge of the triangular cross section. The mould is dropped three times from a height of 2 cm onto a solid surface. If necessary the mould is filled up again. Then the lateral limitations are removed and the excess substance is scraped off. A non-combustible and non-porous plate is placed on top of the mould, the apparatus is inverted and the mould is removed.

As ignition source a flame is used to ignite the pile at one end.
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Specific details on test material used for the study:
- Test item: Zirkonhydrid S
- Batch No.: 79408
- Identity: 97.3% Zr
- Physical state: Dark grey powder
- Storage conditions: Ambient temperature (10 octo 30 °C), under inert gas
- Expiry date: September 11, 2018

Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test over 100 mm length
Burning time:
ca. 38 s
Interpretation of results:
Category 1 (flammable solids) based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The flammability of zirconium hydride was tested according to UN Manual of tests and criteria N°1. The burning time was faster than 45 s and the flame passed the wetted zone. Due to these results, ZrH2 is classified as flammable solid, category 1.

Description of key information
