Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

EC50 (48h) > 100 mg/l with aquatic invertebrates

EC50 (7d) = 10 - 100 mg/l for growth rate of frond number in aquatic plants other than algae

Additional information

No data on Acid Blue 280 was available, thus a read across approach was followed, as detailed in IUCLID section 13.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates was found to be low; an EC50(48h) > 100 mg/l was found based on a weight of evidence approach.

Toxicity to aquatic algae was not assessed, as the colouration of test solution was expected to influence the test outcome due to interference in the photosynthetic process of algae.

Toxicity to aquatic plants other than algae was assessed on lemna gibba and lemna minor, using 2 structural analogues of Acid Blue 280. Lemna gibba was found to be the most sensitive species and an EC50 (7d) for growth rate of frond number was found to be between 10 and 100 mg/l.

According to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), classification for acute aquatic toxicity is:

Category Acute 1:

96 hr LC 50 (for fish) ≤ 1 mg/l and/or

48 hr EC 50 (for crustacea) ≤ 1 mg/l and/or

72 or 96 hr ErC 50 (for algae or other aquatic plants) ≤ 1 mg/l.

For substances for which adequate chronic toxicity data is not available, classification for chronic toxicity relies on acute toxicity data:

Category Chronic 1:

96 hr LC 50 (for fish) ≤ 1 mg/l and/or

48 hr EC 50 (for crustacea) ≤ 1 mg/l and/or

72 or 96 hr ErC 50 (for algae or other aquatic plants) ≤ 1 mg/l.

and the substance is not rapidly degradable and/or the experimentally determined BCF ≥ 500 (or, if absent, the log Pow ≥ 4).

Category Chronic 2:

96 hr LC 50 (for fish) > 1 to ≤10 mg/l and/or

48 hr EC 50 (for crustacea) > 1 to ≤10 mg/l and/or

72 or 96 hr ErC 50 (for algae or other aquatic plants) > 1 to ≤10 mg/l

and the substance is not rapidly degradable and/or the experimentally determined BCF ≥ 500 (or, if absent, the log Pow ≥ 4).

Category Chronic 3:

96 hr LC 50 (for fish) > 10 to ≤ 100 mg/l and/or

48 hr EC 50 (for crustacea) > 10 to ≤ 100 mg/l and/or

72 or 96 hr ErC 50 (for algae or other aquatic plants) > 10 to ≤ 100 mg/l.

and the substance is not rapidly degradable and/or the experimentally determined BCF ≥ 500 (or, if absent, the log Pow ≥ 4).

On these bases, Acid Blue 280 is classified as Category Chronic 3, H412.
