Additional information

Data relating to benzoate salts and potassium salts have been considered

The effects of benzoic acid, sodium benzoate and potassium salts have been considered in this review and algea appear to be more sensitive than either fish or Daphnia.

The toxicity to sodium benzoate to algae (IC50 30 mg/l) appears significantly greater than the toxicity of benzoic acid and although potassium is stimulating to growth of plants

Conclusion on classification

In view of the reported levels of toxicity (10 - 100 mg/l for acute exposure) and in view of the rapid biodegradation, classification is not considered necessary.
