Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Parent compound: In contact with water, the substance will hydrolyse rapidly.
Hydrolysis product diethylene glycol: According to structural properties, hydrolysis is not expected. In addition, the substance is readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Hydrolysis of the parent compound oxidiethylene bischloroformate was tested in a GLP guideline study following OECD TG 111. At 25 °C and pH 7 the half-life was determined to be < 4.1 min. The predicted hydrolysis products diethyleneglycol, HCl and CO2 were identified by gas chromatography with a mass selective detector (GC-MSD) (Safepharm, 2003).

According to structural properties, hydrolysis of diethylene glycol is not expected (OECD 2004; Bothling & Mackay, 2000; Kollig et al., 1993; Lyman et al., 1990). In addition, the substance is readily biodegradable (but failing the 10 -d window; see IUCLID Ch. 5.2.1).
