Germination tests of three days were carried out on agar at 30 °C with Lactuca sativa L. cv. Great Lakes as described previously (Reynolds 1975 and 1977) using aqueous solutions of the appropriate aromatic compounds and inhibitory activity expressed as the millimolar concentration producing 50% reduction in percentage germination compared with water controls at a given temperature.
