Description of key information

Hydroxyethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulfate was found to inhibit the growth of the freshwater green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus at nominal concentrations >= 6.25mg/L (biomass growth) and >=25mg/L (growth rate) corresponding to mean measured concentrations of >=2.98 and >=11.7mg/L respectively. The EC50 values for inhibition of biomass growth (EbC50) and specific growth rate (ErC50) after 72 hours were nominal 19 mg/L and 41 mg/L respectively and mean measured 8.7 mg/L and 19.0 mg/L respectively. Inhibition effects were found to be reversible up to the nominal concentration of 100mg/L (all effect levels given as nominal and mean measured concentrations).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
8.7 mg/L
