Description of key information

No key study is available on the acute toxicity of lutetium oxalate to fish. The endpoint is therefore covered by read across from a study performed with the related substance lutetium oxide (Envigo, 2017; Klimisch 1). In this study, the 96-h acute toxicity of lutetium oxide to juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was studied under semi-static conditions according to OECD Guideline 203 and conform GLP requirements. The toxicity test was performed as a combined range finder-limit test. No mortality was observed during the test, neither in the control nor in the groups exposed to the test item (highest exposure was that in the 100% v/v saturated solution with nominal loading rate 100 mg/L). Since lutetium oxide and lutetium oxalate are both poorly water soluble lutetium compounds, the water solubility of lutetium oxalate (when expressed as Lu concentration) being lower than that of lutetium oxide (i.e., 3.0 mg Lu/L compared to 4.2 mg Lu/L at pH 6.0 and 20°C), the results of this study performed with lutetium oxide are considered suitable for concluding on the endpoint for lutetium oxalate too. The read across study was assigned key status for endpoint coverage.
