Reference
Endpoint:
activated sludge respiration inhibition testing
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
November 10th, 1992
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 209 (Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test
GLP compliance:
no
Details on test solutions:
Due to low solubility, no stock solution was used. The test material was weighed directly into the vessels of the batches.
Test organisms (species):
activated sludge of a predominantly domestic sewage
Details on inoculum:
- Source: municipal wastewater treatment plant Frankfurt / Sindlingen.
- Amount used, activated sludge: 1600 mg/l dry weight.
- Pretreatment: as specified in the testing guideline.
- Acclimation state: tot acclimated in the laboratory to the test substance and the reference substance.
Test type:
static
Water media type:
freshwater
Limit test:
no
Total exposure duration:
3 h
Test temperature:
20 ± 2 °C
pH:
7.2 ± 2, before the measurement of the carbon content.
Nominal and measured concentrations:
In the range of 500 - 1000 mg/l
Reference substance (positive control):
yes
Remarks:
3,5-dichlorophenol
Duration:
3 h
Dose descriptor:
IC50
Effect conc.:
> 1 000 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
inhibition of total respiration
Details on results:
IC20 (3h) > 1000 mg/l
IC80 (3h) > 1000 mg/l
Conclusions:
IC50 (3h) > 1000 mg/l
Executive summary:

The inhibltory effect of test item on waste-water bacteria was investigated in a respiration test, according to the OECD guideline 209. Due to low solubility, no stock solution was used; the test material was weighed directly into the vessels of the batches. the tested concentrations were in the range of 500 - 1000 mg/l. 3,5-dichlorophenol was used as reference substance.

The IC20, IC50 and IC80 after 3 hours of exposure resulted to be higher than 1000 mg/l.

Conclusion

IC50 (3h) > 1000 mg/l

Description of key information

IC50 (3h) > 1000 mg/l

Key value for chemical safety assessment
