Description of key information

The effect of sulfaguanidine on aquatic species has been studied by Liguoro et al. (2010).

According to their results, the EC50 value for acute toxicity against algae (96h exposure) is 3.4 mg/L. As this value is above the 1mg/L threshold for classification as Aquatic acute category 1 according to CLP ( Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging (CLP) of substances and mixtures), it is concluded that sulfaguanidine does not meet the criteria for being classified as Aquatic acute.

The NOEC value for long-term toxicity to Daphnia magna was determined to be 0.395 mg/L. As no data on biodegradability of sulfaguanidine is available, it is considered as a worst-case as being non-rapidly degradable. According to CLP, sulfaguanidine should therefore be classified as Aquatic chronic of category 2 (H411).
