Toxicity to fish

The acute toxicity of Carvacrol was assessed with acute fish toxicity test on Zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio), over an exposure period of 96 hours in a semi-static system. Under the conditions of this study, the observed and calculated endpoints for the effect of CARVACROL were as the following:

The 24h LC50value was foud to be 6.96 mg/L (nominal) (95 % conf. limits: 5.30 - 9.69 mg/L). The 48, 72h and 96h LC50values were all found to be 6.17 mg/L (nominal) (95 % conf. limits: 4.83 - 9.92 mg/L). The 96h LC100value wsa 10.0 mg/L (nominal). The 96h No-Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) was 1.25 mg/L (nominal) and the 96h Lowest Observed Effect Concentration (LOEC) were 2.5 mg/L (nominal).

Toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Acute toxicity of CARVACROL on Daphnia magna was assessed in an acute immobilisation test, over an exposure period of 48 hours in a semi-static test system. Under the conditions of this Daphnia magna acute immobilisation study, the observed endpoints for the effect of CARVACROL were the followings:

The 24h and 48h EC50values were calculated to be 8.74 (7.36 -11.79) mg/L (measured) and 6.06 (5.10 -7.28) mg/L (measured). The 48h EC100value was > 8.61 mg/L (measured). The 48h NOEC and LOECwere 2.16 mg/L (measured) and 4.27 mg/L (measured), respectively.

Toxicity to algae

The effect of Carvacrol test item was assessed on algal growth using the unicellular green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (formerly known as Selenastrum capricornutum), over an exposure period of 72 hours. With respect to the inhibitory effect of the test item, the 0-72 h average specific growth rates were significantly different from that of the control group in the examined concentration range of 2.5-10.0 mg/L (nominal), therefore the NOEC was determined as 1.25 mg/L (nominal) and LOEC was determined as 2.5 mg/L(nominal). The 0-72 h areas and yield were significantly different from that of the control group in the examined concentration range of 1.25-10.0 mg/L (nominal). The NOEC was determined as 0.625 mg/L (nominal); the LOEC was determined as 1.25 mg/L (nominal).

Toxicity to micro-organisms

Activated sludge respiration inhibition test (carbon and ammonium oxidation) was carried out with CARVACROL to the influence of the test item on the activity of activated sludge microorganisms by mensuring the respiration rate under defined condtions. With respect to the inhibitory effect of the test item on the total respiration rate, the 3-hour EC50 value of CARVACROL was determined to be in the range of 10 mg/L to 100 mg/L (75.75 mg/L was calculated, with 95% confidence limits of 68.15 -84.19 mg/L).
