Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
Between 21 June 2012 and 02 October 2012.
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Remarks:
Study conducted in compliance with agreed protocols, with no or minor deviations from standard test guidelines and/or minor methodological deficiencies, which do not affect the quality of the relevant results. The study report was conclusive, done to a valid guideline and the study was conducted under GLP conditions, however no formal claim of GLP compliance was made.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
no
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

Results

Preliminary screening test

The pile failed to ignite during the 2 minutes that the Bunsen flame was applied. The result of the preliminary screening test obviated the need to perform the main test.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
HMDTMP-H has been determined to be not highly flammable as it failed to ignite in the preliminary screening test.
Executive summary:

The flammability (solids) was determined by measuring the burning rate of test item prepared as a pile of set dimensions. Testing was conducted using a procedure designed to be compatible with EU Test Method A.10 Flammability (Solids) of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008.

Conclusion

The test item has been determined to be not highly flammable as it failed to ignite in the preliminary screening test.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be soluble in water to form a stable mixture
Endpoint:
pyrophoric liquids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied

Description of key information

Flammability [HMDTMP (4-7Na)]: non-flammable

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

The substance is only commercially available as aqueous solutions. The substances are involatile and (are demonstrated or expected to) undergo thermal decomposition. The requirement to test the substance for pyrophoricity and flammability in contact with water was waived in accordance with Section 1 of REACH Annex IX, because there is no indication on the basis of structure and experience in use and handling that the substance is pyrophoric (flammable in contact with air) or flammable in contact with water.

HMDTMP-H has been determined not to be flammable as it failed to ignite in the preliminary screening test using method A.10 flammability of solids. This result was read-across to HMDTMP (4-7Na). The salts are not expected to exhibit higher flammable properties than their corresponding parent acids. The potassium salt of the substance was reported as not flammable in a secondary source to which no reliability could be assigned.

HMDTMP-xNa may give off toxic/flammable vapours of phosphine, phosphorus oxides, NOx and/or POx if heated above 200°C to decomposition.

Justification for classification or non-classification

HMDTMP (4-7Na) is not classified for flammability. HMDTMP-H failed to ignite in preliminary screening study performed in accordance with EU test method A.10.
