Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
In accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI, the study does not need to be conducted as ionic liquids are not volatile. Ionic liquids are salts which melt below 100 °C, preferentially below room temperature. This for salts unusual behaviour is due to the fact that the constructive ions have a delocalised charge distribution and are asymmetrical. That’s why they grab inefficiently into undefined structures in the ion-lattice. This ineffective and less precise package leads to less energy of crystallisation, higher entropy and therefore low melting points. The inefficient packing of the ions can not prevent that the interaction among them is strong enough to prevent boiling at atmosphere pressure. Hence ionic liquids are not volatile. Moreover, measurements with substances which have similar structures proved a vapour pressure of <0.000001 hPa at 20 °C.
