Individual results - melting point/range (DSC measurement)

One DSC measurement in an open crucible and two additional DSC measurements in closed glass crucibles were performed. In each case the test item was cooled down to -80 °C with a cooling rate of 10 K/min, -80 °C were kept for 30 min and afterwards the test item was heated up to 10 °C, 20 °C, and 25 °C, respectively, with a heating rate of 10 K/min. During the cooling down the DSC measurements showed an exothermal effect in the temperature range of -30 to -50 °C. During heating up the measurements showed two broad endothermal effects in the temperature range of -55 to -20 °C and in the temperature range of -20 to 0 °C, respectively. The onset temperature (see Table 1) was derived from the intersection of the tangent line with the highest slope of the endothermal peak with the baseline.

The results of the DSC measurements are summarized in Table 1.

Additionally to the DSC measurements, the liquid test item was brought to a temperature of approx. -26 °C with the help of a freezer. A visual check after around 12 h showed a solidified test item which however melted nearly spontaneously completely at room temperature. Taking both the DSC measurements and the visual check at approx. -26 °C into account it can be concluded that the melting point of the test item is below -20 °C.

In literature a polymorphism of the test item compounds is reported with different phases at low temperatures. The results of two endothermal effects in the DSC measurements agree with such phase transitions reported in literature. The latter describes the formation of an orientationally disordered plastic crystalline phase by colling down the test item below its freezing point of approximately -25 to -23 °C.

Conclusions:
The melting point/range of the test item was determined to be not above -20 °C.
Executive summary:

A study was performed according to OECD TG 102 and Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008 method A.1 in order to determine the melting point/range of the test item by using differential scanning calometry method (DSC). In accordance with column 2 Annex VII section 7.2 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH), the test on melting point does not need to be conducted as the melting point of the substance is below -20°C.
