Justification for type of information:
The substance is readily biodegradable and a review of the chemical structure of (R)-(-)-butane-1,3-diol shows that it is a glycol, possessing only alcohol functional groups. Since alcohols are generally resistant to hydrolysis, (R)-(-)-butane-1,3-diol is not expected to hydrolyse in water (Lyman, et al., 1990)

Description of key information

A review of the chemical structure of (R)-(-)-butane-1,3-diol shows that it is a glycol, possessing only alcohol functional groups. Since alcohols are generally resistant to hydrolysis, (R)-(-)-butane-1,3-diol is not expected to hydrolyse in water (Lyman, et al., 1990) - (study scientifically not necessary).

Key value for chemical safety assessment
