Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Toxicity to algae (trimethylsilanol): 72 hr EC50 >684 mg/L (highest concentration tested) and NOEC 44 mg/L based on geometric mean measured concentrations, in accordance with OECD guideline 201.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
44 mg/L

Additional information

A 72-hour EC50 value of >1053 mg/L and NOEC of 70 mg/L have been determined for the effects of trimethylsilanol on growth rate of Selenastrum capricornutum (new name: Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) based on initial measured concentrations of the test substance. When expressed relative to geometric mean measured concentrations the equivalent values are >684 mg/L and 44 mg/L, respectively (Wildlife International 2004).

In view of the test media preparation method/exposure regime it is likely that the test organisms were exposed predominantly to the tested substance. However, at the higher concentrations tested (above 500 mg/l) it is likely that hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDS) would be formed and would therefore contribute to the species present in the test system. See the discussion in the Ecotoxicological Information Section for further details on the formation and toxicity of HMDS.

The study is supported by another study in which a 72-hour algal EC50 value of >1000 mg/l and NOEC of 316 mg/l (Bayer 1992).

The key study has been selected based on the lower NOEC and due to the key study reported containing further details on the test method.
