Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The exothermic and instantaneous hydrolysis of disodium peroxide (Na2O2 - n°CAS 1313 -60 -6) according the reaction:

Na2O2 + H2O -> 2NaOH + 1/2O2

was confirmed by industrial practice (see section 5.1.2 of the IUCLID dossier). After the reaction, the pH of the solution is > 12. Therefore, disodium peroxide is considered as corrosive.

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

With the physico-chemical property (sodium hydroxide generation) and the weight of evidence (industrial practise), disodium peroxide is considered as corrosive on the criteria basis of the CLP regulation.

It is not possible to assign a sub-category on basis on physico-chemical effects (guidance on the application of the CLP criteria, version 5.0, July 2017). However, the harmonised classification (annex VI of regulation n°1272/2008 - CLP00) precised the sub-category 1A. Disodium peroxide is considered as Skin Cor. 1A, H314.
