Exposure controls / personal protection
All processes related to production, use, transfer within the pipework of the production/use facilities and packaging are controlled by a fully automated process control system which itself is controlled by properly trained staff. Each process step is double-checked by both the computer system and a human operator in the control room.
The drumming/packaging stations are fully automated as well and controlled by a human operator. Emerging exhaust, if any, is locally evacuated. Vapors emerging from any process during manufacturing, filling into drums and other containers, storage and use of the intermediate are locally evacuated and treated by either thermal incineration at temperatures above 850 °C or they are burned catalytically.
The system for treating emerging process gases and vapors is designed for highly volatile organic solvents (VOC) which are also used in the registrant's production and use sites. Those VOCs are likely to become airborne during production. Therefore, the risk management measures applied are adjusted to cope with those VOCs. Since the intermediate has a much lower volatility, the risk management measures are highly over-dimensioned with respect to their low volatility. The low volatility is determined by its extremely low vapour pressue of < 7.8x10E-11 atm (cf. section 4.6).
No part of the production equipment is connected to the local wastewater system. No wastewater is generated in any process related to the intermediate. There are generally no emissions into the local sewage water system or into any other water system, e.g. draining rainwater etc. Due to the thermal treatment of process gases and vapors, airborne emissions from registrant’s production plants can be neglected.
It is important to note that no manual handling whatsoever occurs during routine operations in all production and use process of the intermediate. Synthesis of the intermediate takes place in solution, i.e. the intermediate does not exist in its pure, solid form. All operations are carried out in the closed equipment, i.e. reaction vessels, storage tanks and the associated pipework. In the unlikely event of spillage during production and use processes due to a malfunction of the automatic system, the human operator dealing with the situation is protected by chemical resistant gloves or respiratory protection equipment, if needed. Those PPE are able to cope with the severe hazard of the solvents used elsewhere in the production and use processes and are highly over-dimensioned with respect to the non volatile intermediate.
Detailed documentation acc. to art. 18 is available upon request by authorities from registrant.
