Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Propyl gallate is not readily biodegradable, not bioaccumulating, and soluble in water (WS: 2.7 g/L). Due to its physicochemical properties, propyl gallate will be present, remain, or distribute to, aqueous compartments, and will be degraded or metabolized there.

The adsorption/desorption coefficient was estimated to be 492.3 L/kg using the QSAR model KOCWIN v2.00. Accordingly, the substance is likely to moderate sorb to soil or sediment and shows slow migration to groundwater.

Additional information

Propyl gallate was tested according to OECD 301F to be not readily biodegradable, therefore a study on hydrolysis was conducted. In an experimental study according to OECD 111 the test item was found to be hydrolytically stable at pH 4 (DT50 > 1 year at 25°C) and hydrolytically unstable at pH 7 and 9. The results for propyl gallate predict that this substance will have a half-life of 6 days at pH 7 and 3 days at pH 9.

Since the outcome of the environmental risk assessment based on the available data indicates safe use, according to REACH Annex IX, endpoint 9.2, column 1, further biotic degradation testing is not required.
