Description of key information

Aquatic toxicity studies with barium dibenzoate are not available, thus aquatic toxicity will be addressed with existing data on the dissociation products since the ions of barium dibenzoate determine its fate and toxicity in the environment.

Reliable data available for soluble barium substances indicate a low (if any) toxic potential of barium cations since the 3-h NOEC for respiration inhibition of barium chloride is 1000 mg/L (test limit of OECD TG 209).

Reliable aquatic toxicity data of benzoic acid are also available from guideline studies for microorganisms; the lowest EC10 and EC50 values are estimated with ≥ 1000 mg/L and > 1000 mg/L, respectively.

In sum, barium dibenzoate is expected to have a low (if any) potential for toxicity to aquatic microorganisms.
