Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Remarks:
Test performed according to EEC A.10 (Solids), UN Test N.1 & GLP.
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Test Item Name: Gallic Acid
Chemical Name (IUPAC): 3,4,5-Trihydroxybenzoic acid
CAS Number: 149-91-7
Physical Appearance (with color) : White powder
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The flammability of Gallic acid was studied, and it was concluded that the test item should not be classified as a flammable solid according to the GHS criteria.
Executive summary:

The flammability of Gallic Acid was determined as per the test “A.10. Flammability (SOLIDS) of the COMMISSION REGULATION (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008 laying down test methods pursuant to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH)”.

The flammability of the Gallic Acid was studied, and it was concluded during the preliminary test that the test item was not ignited when the burner was kept in contact with the test item for 2 minutes, and that the combustion did not propagate along 200 mm length within 4 minutes. The burning rate test is therefore not applicable for the test item.

It was concluded that the test item should not be classified as a flammable solid according to the GHS criteria.

Description of key information

The flammability of Gallic acid was studied in test performed according to A.10 and GLP.

It was concluded that the test item should not be classified as a flammable solid according to the GHS criteria.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

During the preliminary test, the test item was not ignited when the burner was kept in contact with the test item for 2 minutes, and the combustion did not propagate along 200 mm length within 4 minutes. The burning rate test is therefore not applicable for the test item.

It was concluded that the test item should not be classified as a flammable solid according to the GHS criteria.
