Executive summary:

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria was evaluated for test chemical 1,2-di(ethenyl)benzene. The effect concentration for growth rate and area under growth curve were observed . The effect concentration (EC50) for the growth rate and area under growth curve was in the range of 1.7 to 1.8 mg/l. On the basis of above test concentration it can be concluded that the test chemical 1,2-di(ethenyl)benzene was toxic to aquatic algae and cyanobateria and can be classified as aquatic chronic 2 as per CLP criteria.

Additional information

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria:

Data for target chemical 1,2-di(ethenyl)benzene along with its structurally similar read across substance was used to summarize the short term toxicity of test chemical:

1.Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria was evaluated for test chemical 1,2-di(ethenyl)benzene.

2.Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria was evaluated for aquatic algae and cyanobacteria . The effect concentration (EC50) for the growth rate was observed to be 2.6 mg/l . No observed effect concentration (NOEC) was observed to be 0.30 mg/l.On the basis of above effect concentration it can be considered that the test material was toxic to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria and can be classified as aquatic chronic-2.

3.Toxicity to algae (Selenastrum capricornutum, UTEX 1648) was evaluated according to OECD Method 201. The culture was transferred to sterile enriched media identical to media used for this test and maintained at test conditions for at least 14 days before the definitive test.

During the acclimation period, the culture was actively growing in at least 2 subcultures prior to the start of the toxicity test. The subsample of algae used to inoculate media at the start of the definitive test came from a seven day old culture. A series of solutions was prepared by bringing 0.0010, 0.0020, 0.0040, 0.0081, and 0.0160 g of test substance to 1,000 mL with dilution water in sealed glass bottles. The solutions were mixed on magnetic stirrers for approximately four hours.

The 72-hour EC50s were calculated using the weighted least squares non-linear regression estimation procedure The no observed effect concentration (NOEC) was determined using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Bonferroni’s test . The effect concentration (EC50) 72 hours resulted in an EC50 of 2.6 mg/L the NOEC was observed at the concentration 1.6 mg/l.

On the basis of above effect concentration it can be considered that the test material was toxic to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria and can be classified as aquatic chronic-2
