UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.4 (Test method for self-heating substances)
GLP compliance:
yes
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Physical state: White solid
Storage conditions: Ambient temperature (10 °C to 30 °C)
Expiry date: February 23, 2019
Key result
Test procedure:
25 mm sample cube at 140°C
Max. temp. reached:
272
Induction time (h):
17.5
Result:
positive outcome (effect observed)
Test procedure:
100 mm sample cube at 140°C
Max. temp. reached:
274
Induction time (h):
15
Result:
positive outcome (effect observed)
Interpretation of results:
Category 1 (self-heating substances and mixtures) based on GHS criteria
Executive summary:

For the classification the test item was tested according to division 4.2 (self-heating substances) according to the UN test N.4, described in the “Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods: Manual of Tests and Criteria”, 6th revised edition 2015.
The sample temperature rose to 274°C in a wire netting cube of 10 cm edge length at 140 °C and to 272°C in a wire netting cube of 2.5 cm edge length at 140 °C. Due to the aforementioned results, the test item had to be assigned to Packing Group (PG) II and also the test item had to be classified as “self-heating substance” category 1 according to chapter 2.11 of the UN Globally harmonized system of classification and labelling of chemicals (GHS), 6th revised edition, 2015 (UN GHS) and also chapter 2.11 in the CLP regulation 1272/2008 (EU GHS).

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
test procedure in accordance with national standard methods with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: German VDI 2263 Sheet 1
GLP compliance:
no
Test procedure:
other: testing of burning behaviour (combustion factor) according VDI 2263 Sheet 1
Remarks on result:
other: combustion factor 2 (brief burning and rapid extinguishing) at room temperature
Test procedure:
other: testing of burning behaviour (combustion factor) according VDI 2263 Sheet 1
Remarks on result:
other: combustion factor 3 (Local burning or smoldering with minimal propagation at most) at high ambient temperature (appr. 100 °C)
Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
If a combustion factor of 3 or less is found in the screening test according VDI 2263, Sheet 1 (Test methods for the Determination of the Safety Characteristics of Dusts), the substance should not be classified as a flammable solid and no further testing is required.
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be soluble in water to form a stable mixture
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied

Description of key information

self-heating substance Cat. 1

non flammable by ignition

no pyrophoricity

no flammability in contact with water

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

A combustion factor of 2 (brief burning and rapid extinguishing) was found in a screening test of burning behaviour according VDI 2263, Sheet 1. Therefore the substance is not be classified as a flammable solid. No further testing on flammability on ignition is required.

Based on experience in handling and use and the chemical structure pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not to be expected.

A positive result was obtained in the test for self-heating substances (UN N.4), using a 25 mm sample cube at 140°C. The substance is therefore classified as "self-heating substance" Category 1 according to the CLP regulation and is assigned the Packing Group II.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data on flammability of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008, and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification:

A combustion factor of 2 (brief burning and rapid extinguishing) was found in screening test according VDI 2263, Sheet 1. Therefore the substance is not be classified as a flammable solid.

Based on chemical structure and experience in handling and use, pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not expected.
