Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
no
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Storage: room temperature
Test procedure:
burning rate test with wetted zone
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
Remarks:
The substance did not burn down, there was only a flameless decomposition for approx. 1-2 s after removal of the gas burner.

The substance in its delivery state was measured. The substance did not burn down, there was only a flameless decomposition for approx. 1-2 s after removal of the gas burner. No further testing was required.

Anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt is classified as a not readily combustible solid when tested according to UN-MTC Procedure N.1.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
Anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt is classified as a not readily combustible solid when tested according to UN-MTC Procedure N.1.
Executive summary:

The test was performed as stipulated in UN test procedure ‘Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods - Manual of Tests and Criteria’ (UN-MTC), Part III, sub-section 33.2.1.4.1, Test N.1 ‘Test method for readily combustible solids’.

The substance was formed into a powder train about 250 mm long by 20 mm wide by 10 mm high on a non-combustible, non-porous and low heat-conducting base plate. 30 – 40 mm beyond the 100 mm timing zone, 1 mL of a wetting solution was added to the pile. A hot flame from a gas burner was applied to one end of the powder train until the powder ignites or for a maximum of 2 minutes (5 minutes for powders of metals or metal-alloys). A preliminary screening test was performed to determine if propagation by burning with flame or smoldering occurs without wetted zone. If propagation over 200 mm of the train occurs within a specified time then a full test programme to determine the burning rate was carried out.

Additional information

1. Flammability: Anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt is a non-flammable solid according to UN-MTC test procedure N.1.

2. Self-heating: Anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt does not exhibit self-heating properties.

3. Pyrophoric properties: Anthraquinone-2 -sulfonic acid salt did not deliver indications of pyrophoric properties during the realization of other tests. The determination according to UN-MTC procedure N.2 is not necessary

4. Contact with water: The chemical structure of the substance contains no metals or metalloids. Testing according to UN-MTC procedure N.5 is not necessary with reference to Appendix 6, chapter 5.3.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt is a non-flammable solid, is not flammable in contact with water and does not exhibit pyrophoric or selfheating properties.

Bases on the available information Anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt is not classified for physical hazards according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).
